Is there a best time of the day to practice meditation?
A question from the meditation cohort I facilitate. The cohort is made of meditators inside a women’s prison and meditators in the free world. We come together through a weekly letter exchange.
The best time is when you actually sit and meditate.
If that happens to be in the morning, then the morning is your best time.
If that’s in the afternoon, then that’s your best time.
If that’s at night, you get the idea.
But there are some things you may want to consider:
When are you most at ease, most alert, and least revved up mentally?
For me, this happens to be the morning.
Practicing in the afternoon is difficult because I’m usually in work mode. Night time works, but I usually struggle with staying awake.
But none of the time considerations really matter that much. What is most valuable is that you actually meditate.
Time on your cushion makes a huge difference.
Ready to deepen or start your meditation practice this summer?
What a great question! Thank you for the response and the tips.
I find that it is also better for me to meditate in the morning when the world around me is calmer. Often, I choose to meditate again in the evening, but it is best for me right before bedtime.
